On the Noordermarkt in the heart of the Jordaan, you will find Winkel 43, an authentic Amsterdam corner building where you are welcome all day long. For a cup of coffee early in the morning, a lunch in between, a drink after work, or an evening meal. And yes, also for the apple pie. But Winkel 43 is more than that, and it should feel that way too.
History and atmosphere of Winkel 43
The Jordaan is traditionally a neighborhood where people meet, and Winkel 43 has fit right in since 1978. Locals starting the week with a coffee on the terrace, market visitors dropping in on Saturday after the farmers' market, and travelers trying a slice of apple pie for the first time. Everyone is welcome, without any hassle.
The building is located on the corner of the Noordermarkt and the Westerstraat, in a characteristic property typical of the traditional Amsterdam architectural style. The interior is cozy and simple, the atmosphere warm and casual, just as it should be in the Jordaan.
The apple pie
Winkel 43 is famous for its apple pie, and rightly so. Freshly baked daily, with a thick crispy crust, soft spiced apples, and whipped cream. The recipe has been the same for years, and that is a good thing. What many people do not know: the pie is made by a special team. Through Cordaan, people with a disability help bake in our kitchen every day, with craftsmanship and pleasure. You can taste that.
More than apple pie
Besides the apple pie, we serve breakfast, lunch, bar snacks, and dinner. The lunch menu changes monthly, the evening menu daily, featuring Dutch classics and honest prices. No complicated menu, just tasty and affordable. There are also vegetarian and vegan options.
On sunny days, the terrace on two sides of the building, on both the Noordermarkt and the Westerstraat, is one of the nicest places in the neighborhood to sit outside, summer and winter.
Larger, but the same
Winkel 43 is growing. We have taken over the adjacent building and set it up as an extension of our location, with its own apple pie kitchen where the famous pie is now baked. More space for guests, less waiting outside. The coffee corner has also been updated with a brand-new espresso machine, and the kitchen and restrooms of the original location have been renovated. Step by step, we are investing in a better experience, without losing our character.
The market at your doorstep
The Noordermarkt is active every Monday and Saturday. On Monday, there is the patch market with vintage clothing, furniture, and fabrics. On Saturday, the organic farmers' market with fresh products from local farmers. On market days, Winkel 43 opens as early as 7:00 AM and offers a special market menu. A perfect combination.
